Why use KISSS Subsurface Capillary Irrigation?

There have not been vast technological advances with most typical subsurface drip irrigation systems over the past forty years, until now.  The KISSS subsurface capillary irrigation system is quickly changing the way people, from all over the world, view subsurface irrigation systems.
KISSS irrigation is different from drip irrigation because it uses capillary action to evenly distribute water throughout the soil. It does this by dispersing water out into the soil at the precise rate for the specified irrigated soil type. Our technology ensures the water distribution will be even and efficient; only watering in areas that need water. Because of such even distribution the KISSS system uses LESS WATER than drip Irrigation and LESS WATER than sprinklers; wetting more soil volume.
KISSS has changed irrigation for all applications, including subsurface sports field irrigation, drip irrigation for agriculture, and green roof irrigation systems, as well as subsurface irrigation applications for large commercial and municipal projects.
There are many advantages to using the KISSS System including, but not limited to:

1. KISSS minimizes tunneling of water to the surface, a problem typically due to dispersion; this is due in part to the polyurethane backing on the material.

2. KISSS prevents initial gravitational loss of water to allow the soil more time to absorb the water before gravity starts to cause percolation.

3. KISSS produces a double backing wetting pattern that is three times the width of drip line.

4. KISSS produces uniformly moist soil increasing oxygen concentration for vital plant development.

5. KISSS has an infinite number of dripper points on the geo-textile layer, allowing it to maintain a larger dripper pore size, which is more likely to minimize plugging. This also ensures a more continuous and evenly distributed wetted row.

6. When fertilizing through the KISSS system the plant is able to receive an even distribution of vital nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorous, in a more uniform manner because the geo-textile material creates even distribution over the length of the line rather than oversaturation near a single emitter.

7. For the same surface area, KISSS can be installed in turf using less than half the amount of standard drip lines.

8. KISSS does not cause pooling on the surface of the field due to excessive saturation around a dripper.

9. Due to the high levels oxygen maintained in the soil, mechanical aeration is no longer required. However, if aeration is required, this can be done through our system.

10. With the capillary irrigation system implemented, root intrusion is no longer an issue because the root follows a moisture gradient and the emitter is fully protected by the geo-textile fabric.

Why Choose KISSS Irrigation Over Conventional Overhead Irrigation Systems?

1. Low Application Rates - a distinctive feature of KISSS is our very low water application rate . Data shows the use of KISSS irrigation on sports field uses less than 3/8” of water per week, whereas a standard sprinkler system uses almost 1.5” of water per week.

2. We Put the Water Where it’s Needed - KISSS monitors a plant’s water consumption and evenly helps to flow water directly to the root zone at a proportion which is suited for the specific soil type used. Concentrating the water distribution to the root zone allows roots to grow deeper, creating a healthier, more drought tolerant plant.

3. Less Expensive Hardware - With our low water application rate, this can often mean smaller and more efficient use of pumps, filters and pipelines because the system components required are often sized for lower flow rates and a for a longer period. With our lower water application rate , this can also mean lower capital and operating costs.

4. Eliminate Runoff of Fertilizer and Effluents - The low water application rates presents distinct advantages when dealing with slopes or effluent water.  KISSS products are designed to deal with slope problems . Other issues regarding effluent water occurs when effluent water stagnates and pools, major health concerns when irrigating. Since KISSS products distribute a proportional amount of water dependent on the soil type, this prevents such issues from occurring.

5. Uniformity of Water Application - Another highly desirable feature of KISSS is the excellent uniformity of water application achieved. Uniform water application means that all plants receive the same amount of water.

6. More Efficient Application of Fertilizer – By applying the fertilizer directly to the root zone , fertilizer is distributed more evenly and has better access to the plant . We reduce over 30% of fertilizer requirements.

7. No Water Loss Due to Overspray and Wind - When spray systems are used, a major part of the irrigation system is lost to wind drift, evaporation, over-spray and runoff. Since KISSS is a subsurface system, this is no longer an issue.

8. The Classic Evaporation - Transpiration Equations are no longer necessary. With KISSS systems the books need to be re-written to gauge the “water recovery” factor; as it is showing as even more efficient than drip line. Typically the factor is 1/3 of the evapotranspiration values typically arrived at.

9. The Root Zone Conditions are Automatically Optimized - Consistent soil moisture content is maintained and oxygen concentration in the root zone is uniform with KISSS because . The root zone is never saturated with water since the system is subsurface.

10. Salinity Issues are Greatly Reduced – Generally, when water is salty, it makes it difficult for plants to directly be sprayed. Often subsurface salts are an issue due to percolation. However, with the KISSS product, these issues are eliminated.

11. Improved Disease Control – Uniform wetting at the root zone maintains disease control. The spread of any existing disease organisms usually onset by water movement is less likely with our systems because KISSS products are placed subsurface and completely eliminate surface water run-off. And since our system is implemented subsurface, fungal diseases such as 'Dollar Spot' are less likely to occur in turf conditions because there no water is sprayed on the turf blades.

12. Application in "Problem Soils" – Our capillary irrigation systems are ideally suited for "problem soils". The low application rate KISSS irrigation systems supports is ideal for tight clay soils with low infiltration rates, as the water can be applied slowly enough for the soil to absorb it without surface run-off. Other conditions, like sandy soils frequently cannot store large amounts of water; and under conventional irrigation systems much of the applied water is lost to deep percolation. KISSS irrigation is ideal for such soils as it allows for a more effective use of the pulse irrigation method.

13. Reduced Surface Weed Germination – Seeds need to be in contact with wet soil for them to germinate. Many seeds have a coating that must be exposed to water to be dissolved before they can germinate. If the surface is not wetted the weed seeds that are deposited on the surface are not able to germinate.

14. Increased Plant Growth – Documented studies have show that vegetables and shrubs grow up to 15% faster and produce crops in up to 15% less time with our subsurface, capillary action irrigation systems. As moisture stress increases, physiological changes within the plant cause a reduction in growth rate. Our system reduces these stresses by its ability to maintain a consistent soil moisture level slightly below field capacity to achieve maximum health and growth.

15. Lower Pressure Operation - KISSS systems operate on a lower pressure level compared to the conventional spray method. Spray systems operate between 40 and 80 PSI, whereas the KISSS Systems operates between 20 and 50 PSI. This means that systems can easily operate water mains under very low-pressure conditions.

16. Reduced Risk of Injury - In today’s industry, there is an elevated liability regarding dangers to the public, from injuries caused by sprinkler heads poking above the grass on playing fields to slippery pavements, as well as roadways. The KISSS solution provides a system with assurance of safety because our product has zero exposed parts and no overspray.

17. Reduced Exposure to Vandalism - For most municipalities, the problem of vandalism has become a maintenance nightmare and source of great expense. The KISSS irrigation option has proven to be an ideal solution because our system is subsurface, and less likely to be vandalized. Data analysis has demonstrated the trend of the industry to move towards subsurface systems to deal with vandalism issues.

18. Flexible Watering Time - In sports turf, gardens, pools and other public facilities, watering time is a major concern since most water time needs to occur when the public is not present. The restriction of the watering time means that water has to be applied at a more concentrated rate in order for adequate water distribution to occur. With the KISSS solution, all distribution is subsurface, so watering time is no longer constricted to a rigid time frame. Our system provides a 24 hour irrigation time window allowing lower water application rates, better use of our restricted water supply and an overall, lower investment and operating costs.

19. Effluent Water Re-use -We believe our most exciting application of our capillary irrigation system is in the area of effluent water reuse. KISSS irrigation resolves many of the health issues associated with spraying of effluent water onto landscapes, as used in conventional sprinkler systems. When the effluent water is applied underground through a dedicated effluent system, as with KISSS products, the chances of harmful bacteria coming in contact with humans is minimized. This form of effluent water disposal requires a less costly and a more environmental friendly treatment for levels of sewage.

20. Reduced Liability – In parks, gardens and near roadways, water overspray and leaky sprinklers create slippage risks that are overcome by our system.

21. Eliminates Staining of Structures – Sprinklers spray on fences, expensive masonry and on homes causing mineral staining, moss growth and leaching of natural oils from the woods. Wood structures eventually mold and rot from the cycles of moisture and dryness. KISSS does not operate off of a sprinkler system; our subsurface technology avoids these aesthetic issues and maintains low maintenance costs associated.
